Dancing with Dyslexia: An autobiography of Risa Cohen
Risa's
story is a true story of victory. Dancing with Dyslexia is
the autobiographical account of Risa
Cohen’s
battle with dyslexia, a condition which plagued her all through
her
childhood. Risa was dismissed from school in the second grade
because she was unable to read or write. It took her ten years
to re-enter into a "normal" classroom. At the
age of fifteen, Risa began her fight to over come dyslexia.
After completing high school, Risa wasted no time,
entering into a university on probation. She graduated
with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a minor in
Women’s Studies and with honors. After many years of
fighting she finished a winner.
"The
purpose of this book was to illustrate to the world that
courage lives in all of us. There is simply no use in giving
up or stopping when we are faced with obstacles. We must find
that place, in ourselves, where the fighter lives, bring them
out, and win our battles to make us survivors and successful.
Looking back at my life I can say, 'I did it! I overcame
a severe obstacle.' What was crucial was that I wrote
it all down, so others who needed help could find it through
my stories of strength, perseverance and victory. After reading
this book
you will see that you too have the ability to succeed. My intention
was to inspire dyslexics and other learning disabled people.
I wanted to instill hope in parents and educate teachers about
the power and struggles of being a multidimensional thinker.
I wanted to remind all of us that, everybody needs encouragement,
especially dyslexics."
